The Castello di Barberino was initially built in the 12th century as a military garrison to protect the main route of access to Florence for those coming from Bologna and the northern hills. During the centuries it was destroyed and rebuilt several times before acquiring its actual structure.
It stands on a small hill dominating the Aglio river valley; it is immersed into nature and surrounded by a vast Italian garden and by pine woods. The thick walls enclose a large courtyard on which several buildings look out, including the main house.
The Castello di Barberino often hosts music and theater events to which the owners attribute great importance.
