Quartetto Mitja was formed in 2008 and consists of four musicians which come from Naples, Cosenza, Potenza and La Serena (Cile).
“Mitja” is short for Dimitrij, used by Shostakovich’s mother to call her son and through this name the composer remembers the audience to look at the future with bravery in order to create without limits.
The Quartet specialized in Florence (Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, Accademia Europea del Quartetto); Cremona (Accademia W. Stauffer); Paris (ProQuartet Academy); Weikersheim (Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland); Imola (Incontri col Maestro – Accademia Pianistica Internazionale) and with Quartetto Artemis, Quartetto Alban Berg, Quartetto Casals, Quartetto Kuss, Quartetto di Cremona, Antonello Farulli (Quartetto Sinopoli) and Andrea Nannoni.
Quartetto Mitja won important study awards from Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (2010), ProQuartet di Parigi (2011-2012-2013-2014), Fondazione “A. Ciampi” (2012), Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland (2012). They won the Rotary Club International EMF Young Musician 2016 prize, the First prize at the European competition Jacopo Napoli and it has been awarded at the XXXIV Nazional Competition “Francesco Cilea” and at the XIV International Competition Pietro Argento.
In 2019, the Quartet won a study award from Associazione Mozart Italia in Modica to take part in a Masterclass led by M° Alfred Brendel.
The Quartet was part of the jury at the “I.C.A. Composition Competition 2019”.
The monographic disc on Gian Francesco Malipiero published in 2016 for the record label “TACTUS” was appreciated by the critics getting 5 stars from the German magazine “Pizzicato” and the dedicated Italian monthly magazine “Musica”. Excellent reviews also for the recordings in collaboration with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Calabria and the record labels Warner Music, Amadeus and Brilliant.
In 2017, the ensemble has been selected to join Le Dimore del Quartetto network.
The Quartet has been guest of important international festivals such as: Associazione I Teatri – Premio Borciani; Festival dei 2 Mondi (Spoleto); Associazione Alessandro Scarlatti (Napoli); Fondazione Walton; ProQuartet Rencontres Musicales; Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland (Weikersheim); QuartFest Cluj-Napoca (Romania); Festival di Pentecoste; Jeux d’Art à la Villa d’Este di Tivoli; Gioventù Musicale Italiana; Imola Summer Festival; Filarmonica Laudamo (Messina); Teatro Alighieri (Ravenna), Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Filarmonica Laudamo, MAIN Matera Intermedia, Università del Sacro Cuore, Ateneo Musica Basilicata, Festival del Lago Maggiore, Teatro Litta.
They have collaborated with great musicians such as Giovanni Sollima, Simone Gramaglia and Giovanni Scaglione (Quartetto di Cremona), Robert Lehrbaumer, Philippe Berrod, Antonio Fraioli, Antonello Farulli, Giovanni Punzi, Duo Blanco Sinacori, Flavio Cucchi, Renzo Pelli, Francesco Nicolosi and Andrea Corsi.
The Quartet has taken part in many radio and television shows like Radio3 Suite, Radio Vaticana, Radio CRC, Radio Merge104.8 (Oman), Rai2, La7 and NapoliTV. Furthermore, they stably collaborate with the musicologist, composer and pianist Giovanni Bietti.
The american director Francis Ford Coppola chosen Quartetto Mitja for a concert in Palazzo Margherita in .Bernalda. In 2015, the ensemble toured the Sultanate of Oman holding numerous concerts and seminars in collaboration with Arabesque International under the patronage of the Italian Embassy in Muscat.
The company COELMO “Energia in musica” is the official sponsor of Quartetto Mitja.They financed their recording of Ravel’s quartet, the production of four promotional artistic videos in collaboration with GMM production and supported the creation of Note Sensoriali, an unpublished show based on the synaesthesia of the 5 senses.
The musicians of Quartetto Mitja have been principals in the Matera Rolling Orchestra that was created by an idea of Federico Ferrandina in collaboration with RedCola Music/Sound design,Venice (California – USA).
The Quartet plays a violin Postiglione and a viola Mario Capicchioni from Associazione Piero Farulli a violin Trimboli.
