CASTELLO DI RONCADE, RONCADE (TV)

Categories , ,

The Castello di Roncade is one of the most unique examples of living Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy. It is the only pre-Palladian villa to be surrounded by Medieval walls with crenellations and towers. The castle stands right in the heart of Roncade, a small town in the Veneto countryside between Treviso and Venice. It sits on the ruins of a tenth century castle given to the Collalto Counts by Emperor Otto II. Indeed, the original castle was destroyed by Cangrande della Scala. It was only in the sixteenth century that Girolamo Giustinian, a member of the Venetian aristocracy, set out to rebuild the castle upon the ruins of the former edifice. He built the complex as we can still see it today. The stately residence was designed by renowned Venetian architect Mauro Coducci – whose works also include the clock tower in San Marco Square in Venice.

The villa was the residence of the Giustinian family for nearly four centuries. At the end of the nineteenth century the Venetian branch of the family was extinct, and the Castello was sold to the Ciani Bassetti family, whose roots are in the agricultural nobility of the Trento region.

THE PROPOSALS OF CASTELLO DI RONCADE

One hundred and ten hectares of vineyards, with a terroir characterised by low precipitation and a layer of consolidated clay and silt just a few centimetres beneath the soil surface, locally known as “caranto”, allows Castello di Roncade to produce some great quality wines. Aroma driven whites and full bodied reds have been able to stand out and have been awarded important prizes in top wine guides and competitions.

Native to the Treviso wine region this variety was already well established in the times of the Venetian Serenissima Republic as a vin da viajo, which broadly translates from the local dialect into “suitable for travel”. It is a robust wine with firm tannins and refreshing acidity.

Villa Giustinian is the flagship wine of Castello di Roncade. It is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, which ages in French oak barrels for at least 24 months. A very careful selection of only the healthiest grapes of the best vintages allows the wine to improve with further ageing in the bottle.

THE HISTORY OF THE FAMILY

Today Castello di Roncade is guided by the Barons Ciani Bassetti whose roots are in the agricultural nobility of the Trento region. They purchased the Castello and the surrounding lands at the beginning of the twentieth century and undertook an extensive renovation of the property, and vineyard replanting.
In the early 1900s, in fact, Baron Tito Ciani Bassetti chose Castello di Roncade as the new residence for his family and the place where he could follow one of his dreams: to make wine in an area that had been part of the Serenissima, and since the Roman age most suitable for winegrowing. Castello di Roncade winery and estate, steered by Vincenzo Ciani Bassetti, today includes the land surrounding the great villa. A mission to preserve and enhance the property has always gone hand in hand with our commitment to managing the vineyards and winemaking.
